I have spoken about the podcast ‘Good Bad Billionaire’ on my Substack before-read here- (Issue #28 - by Fiz - Every Page She Turns (substack.com) ) it is a podcast in which it delves into the lives of these billionaires, questioning their motives and the impact of their wealth on society. Hosts
and Simon Jack explore how these individuals made their fortunes and whether they use their power for good or ill. The podcast highlights a crtitcal issue: the richest people often have the loudest voices shaping policies and decisions that affect us all. It is a really interesting podcast one that you should give a listen. After reading Tim Schwab’s book, ‘The Bill Gates Problem: Reckoning with the Myth of the Good Billionaire’ I realised this is a bigger issue than I realised. It further explores and argues that billionaires like Bill Gates use their wealth to wield enormous political power without accountability. This concentration of power in the hands of a few raises serious questions about democracy and equality.
I also just finished Walter Isaacson’s biography of Elon Musk and it provides an in-depth look at the life on one of the most influential tech entrepreneurs. Read my review here- https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/7272677829
It surprised me how involved billionaires and people with a huge amount of wealth influences politics and policies. In the book Isaacson’s notes Musk’s lefty start but like America ended up siding with the far right. His influence on global politics and and actions all question whether he really wants support to further develop his work or whether he is influenced by power and wants it for himself.
The recent inauguration of Donald Trump saw a surprising number of tech billionaires in attendance. From Elon Musk to Jeff Bezos, these tech titans were front and center, raising eyebrows and concerns about the influence of the ultra-wealthy on politics. The presence of these tech giants at Trump’s inauguration is a stark reminder of the growing influence of the ultra-wealthy. As these individuals continue to amass power, we must question their motives and the impact of their actions on society. The richest voices should not drown out the needs and rights of the many. It’s time to critically examine the role of billionaires in our world and demand greater accountability and transparency.
It is concerning because their influence is a risk to a society in which the rich make decisions that benefit them and the ones they have control over.
