Hi Page Turners,
Another bank holiday weekend this time to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III. The classic British weather reflects my mood. It is kind of sad that the sun didn't come out for Charles' big day but that is Britain for you. I don't know if it is because of finals or just because of a different reason but I am feeling very meh. I am hoping you are feeling better and you have had a great week. What has been your 'high' of the week? Hit the reply button or click below to let me know. Over on my blog my post of what I read in the month of April is now published check it out here: https://fizwrites.wixsite.com/website/post/the-books-i-read-in-april-2023
Books 📚
I finished two books this week trying to get back into reading after a slumpy period. What have you picked up this week. Also I am building my summer tbr (just the thought of it makes me happy 😍) so what books are you looking forward to reading in the coming months?
The books I read this week are;
Rainy Day Friends by Jill Shalvis review here. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5514686250?book_show_action=false
And a non-fiction book Can't We Just Print More Money by Rupal Patel and Jack Meaning review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5523582076?book_show_action=false
Opinion piece📰
With the coronation that took place yesterday new research has highlighted Charles's direct ancestors and their relation to the slave trade. This is not a shock nor is it new information however what I do appreciate is Charles's support in researching the background/history between the relations of the monarchy and the slave trade.
My own opinions and thoughts aside of what I think of the monarchy and the royal family, they royals do know how to put on a show. A quarter of me champions it because I live for tradition and the ott-ness of it and I mean he has waited seventy odd years for it. So why not? However the rational side of me thinks at what cost. From teachers to hospital workers are out sticking for more money, the cost of living, the war in Ukraine/Sudan etc. In a modern day do we really need such celebrations? Who is it really for? With their own family problems and the anti-monarchy protests was all this really worth it, wouldn't he rather have a intimate 'slimmed' down event.
Further reading 📑
Hi, it's me...I am talking AI again. Geoffrey Hinton has quit Google because of the development and the pace of the technology. (Major eye roll moment) In an interview he spoke of regretting his life's work talking about the risk of AI and saying it is not as intelligent than us...yet but it very soon will be. I don't know if he is a reader of literature but did he not read Frankenstein or 1984...or even research and analyse Facebook's rise. If I saw him I would say I told you so...this statement coming from someone like him is very worrying.
So the Met Gala happened this week and with the coronation I just think it is similar to the coronation...excess and just defines the rich from poor. They don't celebrate BIPOC designers and honestly this year's outfits were disappointing. Serena Williams announced she was pregnant, Federer attended, Jenna Ortega channelled her inner Wednesday Addams (the making of her dress was really interesting to watch) and Dojo Cat could have been hired as Tigris for The Hunger Games.
💭 My 3 am thoughts 🕒
By celebrating the monarch and its continuity are we normalizing their colonial crimes/past and its association and links to the slave trade.
Love always wins. This couldn't be more true for Charles and Camilla. It is such a shame that people's lives have been ruined to get to where they are now but you can't take away the fact that they stood the test of time and they literally went through everything together.

(A very wholesome and genuine doc of Charles).
Quote of the week ✏
'But the thing was, love wasn't in the bouquet of flowers or the romantic, candle-lit dinners. It was in the everyday stuff, like knowing when your person was tired and needed help,understanding what made them tick, what to do to soothe and comfort. How to be at their back when their back was up against a wall.' (Taken from Rainy Day Friends)
