Hi Page Turners,
As we inch closer to September does everyone get the 'back to school feeling' or is it just me. If your reading this you have got your A Level/BTEC results back congrats on whatever results you have got. How has your week gone, what has your high and low of the week been reply back to this email or leave a comment below.
Books 📚
This week I finished a devastating book that captures two teenagers lives living amidst the war gin Syria. As Long as the Lemmon Tree Grows is a beautiful, hopeful story capturing the painful and tragic consequence war has. It is a 'must read' that everyone needs to pick up. The week before that I finished but got around reviewing this week was Lessons by Ian McEwan which I also loved you can find my review for that here- https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/4581434774?book_show_action=false
Opinion piece📰
A-levels | I read that students may miss out on those top marks due to results being marked are back to pre-pandemic levels and honestly I do feel for those students because Covid disrupted their learning. However I do see the need for marking to go back to pre-pandemic levels and whatever year they do this the outcome will always remain the same. It is harder for disadvantaged students because this disadvantages them more.
For me my A Level results meant more than my GCSE's and I put so much more pressure on myself and worked so hard but when it came to results I told myself whatever I was to get I would be proud of myself. There are some people who don't get the A's/A* who beat themselves up about it and partly I think that's down to society. (I will do a blog post about this because I will probably go on and on so subscribe so you don't miss out on that post).
Further reading 📑
This week I re-watched a Bollywood Classic 'Kabhi Khushi Khabie Gham'.
The last time I watched it was when I was a child I can't remember who had it on, but I remembered snippets of it with such fondness and nostalgia. So when I came across it, it was a sign I just had to watch it. It is just the BEST comforting, uplifting film with a stellar cast and an amazing soundtrack. I mean it is just timeless. You have all the ingredients an over the top choreography, really cringey moments but such heartfelt I-cried-over-it moments. I need to re-watch all the Bollywood movies again. (Honestly I could do a blog post just on this 😂😂)
💭 My 3 am thoughts 🕒
The fact that 99's don't cost 99p from an ice cream van still angers me 😁 but I guess it's the time we live in.
What's your favourite Ice-cream?
Quote of the week ✏
'There can be a complacency to failure as much as a complacency to success.'- Taken from Elizabeth Finch
'This story is about the ones who have no choice but to leave their home. For years Syrians have been tortured, murdered and banished from their country at the hands of a tyrannical regime, and we owe it to them to know their stories.'- Taken from authors note As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow.
