Issue #3
In the week the Academy Award winners made history and the world was gripped by the impartiality row.
Hi Page Turners,
What have you been up to this week? This week has been kind of chill for me. I had catch-ups, zoom meetings on Monday, catching up on uni reading and seminars and of course, starting the process of gathering material and notes for an assignment (it never ends does it) 😄
Books 📚
I am re-reading Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid. In my opinion her best book. This time I am actually listening to it as an audiobook 🎧 and I am falling in love with it even more. You can find my review of the book here- https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/4755948016
I am so obsessed with the book I made a dedicated Pinterest board (which is when you know I go all fangirl on it) the link- https://www.pinterest.co.uk/fizwrites/carrie-soto-is-back-my-bias/
I finished reading Snap by Belinda Bauer. Longlisted for
back in 2018 a crime novel that is so readable and heart-wrenching it is one not to be missed. Review here- https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5403710472?book_show_action=falseWhat have you all been reading? Any recommendations, have you read the above? If you have let me know how you have found it if not are you intrigued-is it worth putting on your TBR?
Opinion piece📰
The Gary Lineker tweet scandal that has not only shown that the BBC have struggled to adapt to the social media age but has also shown how they pick and choose but also how they used Lineker as a scapegoat.

This is where it all started from-

This story began with the criticisms towards the government’s plan to stop asylum seekers crossing the Channel in small boats. This should have been the forefront of the conversation however it got pushed to the side because the BBC decided Lineker was impartial even though he is a sports presenter tweeting on a political subject. It is funny how the BBC are very quick to judge someone who is defending the fundamental human rights of refugees yet won’t question the Chairman Richard Sharp who gave a loan to Boris Johnson and why he didn’t tell the MP’s. I am glad it backfired on the BBC and they are humiliated but it is frustrating that the narrative has shifted to the impartiality rather than where it all began which is the refugees. It has highlighted the role of journalism in the age of the ever evolving social media.

Last thoughts- I really think we should address the guidelines and the BBC should review and renew them however we should bring the conversation back to what matters and is important. The refugees!
The historical win at the Oscars 2023 was the best news this week. Best Actress Michelle Yeoh (who is killing it and looks amazing for her age) dedicated her award to boys and girls who look like her and also to the ‘ladies, never let anyone tell you you’re past your prime’. A very heart-warming and inspirational win because of the representation she will inspire to the boys and girls but also Ke Huy Quan’s win who was once a refugee in a boat and is now an Oscar winner standing on the stage and saying to his Mom he did it.

💭 My 3am thoughts 🕒
Michelle and Ke Huy Quan are proof that dreams and hard work truly pay off. But why does it take so long together? Me: the rewards are sweeter.
Also me: I think I will forever be dreaming. 😁
