Issue #57
Hi Page Turners,
As Palestine face yet another air strike and continue to be relentlessly attacked the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is undergoing surgery. As Ramadan is approaching its end it is a shame that the international pressure of calling a cease-fire isn't powerful or forceful enough to demand a permanent and immediate ceasefire. I hope those who celebrates Easter had a good weekend and enjoying your holidays. Let me know what you are up to by commenting below or replying back to this e-mail.
Reading 📚
As it is Ramadan I have finished reading The Qur'an. For years I have been reading it in Arabic and because I don't speak or write in Arabic I don't fully understand the meaning so I decided to read an English translation alongside the Arabic. The Qur'an I read is called 'The Majestic Quran: A Plain English Translation' by Musharraf Hussain and you can find my review here- https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/6338196770?book_show_action=false
Articles of interest 📰
This week I wasn't surprised to read that there is a men-only establishment amongst prominent figures that not only bars women but is predominantly white. Read more here- https://www.theguardian.com/society/2024/mar/18/garrick-club-men-only-members-list-roll-call-british-establishment
I have a bunch of new books on my to be read list thanks to this article- https://lithub.com/literary-rashomon-10-novels-with-rotating-perspectives/ that recommends 10 different books with different p.o.v's/perspectives.
Admittedly I have only read one book of Stephan King's and that too was years ago so I can vaguely remember it. I am not a big reader of the horror genre but I definitely want to read some of his books. It has been 50 years since he wrote Carrie (I have watched the movie-the Chloe Grace Mortez version) and maybe it's a sign to start with that. In this article Atwood writes about its enduring appeal and its relevance to today's day and age. Read it here- https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/25/books/review/stephen-king-carrie-50-anniversary
Kate Middleton announced she had cancer, but was that due to the pressure of the public. It reinforces the power the media has but also questions where do you draw the line. This article discusses this and why it shouldn't be any of our business. https://www.thecut.com/article/kate-middleton-cancer-diagnosis-privacy
The tragic event of the Baltimore Bridge collapse, these are the live updates. It collapsed after a container ship lost power and crashed into the bridge. https://apnews.com/live/baltimore-key-bridge-collapse-latest-2024
Climate change is the reason why timekeepeers may subtract a second from world clocks. This is terrifying news. Read more here- https://apnews.com/article/leap-second-subtract-melting-ice-clocks
Podcast 🎧
I have been listening to Strike a BBC Sounds Podcast that details the miners strike and all that went down. It is such important history and to be honest I was more interested in it after watching Sherwood (highly recommend my review is on my monthly RECAP on my blog) as it was a fictional drama based on fact. Listen here - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0hls8rl
